Swedish Film “She Monkeys” Wins Tribeca Prize

Swedish film has won the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. The film “She Monkeys” was directed by Lisa Aschan, the film depicts a complicated relationship between 2 teenage girls competing under intense pressure in the equestrian world. She Monkey’s won jury comments as haunting, resonant, but never posed.
Israeli director Alma Har’el’s “Bombay Beach”, a film about a small community on the Salton Sea in California, US received the best documentary feature award.
Shami Bizimana was the top male acting prize went to for his performance in “Grey Matter”, while Dutch actress Carice van Houten pocketed the actress award for her performance in the 1960s-set apartheid drama “Black Butterflies”.
South Korean director and writer Park Jung-bum won the prize for new narrative director for “Journals of Musan”. Award of the best screenplay went to Norwegian Jannicke Systad Jacobsen for her offbeat sexual coming-of-age story “Turn Me On, Goddammit.”
Co-Managing Director and Programmer of the festival Nancy Schafer said that they are truly pleased to have had such a great group of filmmakers at Tribeca, and added that audiences and juries have responded so positively to the films.
Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the festival said in a statement that it’s wonderful to have reached their 10th edition and to be able to celebrate with all of these gifted filmmakers. Rosenthal said that they have been fortunate that as they have grown they have remained a place that welcomes a diverse range of stories told by compelling and exciting filmmakers and they are truly honored that the community has supported the festival all these years, the community of New York and the international film community.
The festival has attracted more than 3 million attendees and has generated an estimated $600 million US in economic activity for New York City since its first edition in 2002.
