Five people, including a nurse and midwife, have been arrested on the charge of terminating the five-month pregnancy of a young woman who had married a man of her choice against the wishes of her family. Parveen Mahar says that she was taken by her cousin to the house of nurse Shoukat Begum, in the colony of the old taluka hospital in Mirpur Mathelo, on Sunday where midwife Mukhtarian Sheikh forced the abortion.

Ms. Mahar has contacted various television channels and informed them of her plight. Ali Mohammad Mahar, father of the young woman, mother Khandul and cousin Mauj Ali were also arrested.

Ms. Mahar said that she had not been in contact with her family since her marriage. However about a fortnight ago she agreed to meet her parents after they assured her that they had accepted her marriage. She said that when she went to her parents’ house on Sunday, where her cousin forcibly took her to the house of the nurse where her five-month pregnancy was terminated.

She said that she repeatedly asked police to register an FIR against Mauj Ali, Mukhtiaran and Shoukat but this was yet to be done. A police official told the journalists that the arrested people would be presented in court on Monday. Ms. Mazhar, meanwhile was taken to a hospital in Sakkur because of her deteriorating health.
