Five Iraq Sunni Militiamen Assassinated by Gunmen

Dec 31st, 2011

According to the Iraqi security officials some unknown gunmen carrying silenced weapons opened fire at a checkpost which was being controlled by the government-supported Sunni militiamen and killed all the five present there. This violent incident took place in the comparatively restive northern province of Dayala. Police and the head of the local security committee said that this attack took place just after 2300 GMT in the town of Khan Bani Saad, which is located some 30 km northeast of Baghdad. Head of the security committee in Khan Bani Saad, Saad Abdullah said that an attack of such a stature that claims lives of five security men indicates very well that the sleeper cell groups of Al-Qaeda are now re-activating and getting themselves organized as the American troops have evacuated the country. He said further that the government needs to immediately launch a crackdown against these groups which are Al-Qaeda affiliates.

The insurgents who have got not only sympathy but also get moral and material support from the international terrorist organization are still having the capability to launch lethal attacks against especially after the evacuation of the American troops on December 18. The nine years of US invasion of Iraq after the toppling of Saddam’s regime failed to find out the Weapons of Mass Destruction, the main agenda of entering Iraq.

The Islamic State of Iraq, the Iraqi affiliate of Al Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for the series of attacks that have rocked Baghdad claiming at least 72 lives on December 22. The workers of Sahwa, a Sunni militia had taken up their arms against the Al Qaeda and helped the Iraqi government get rid of the rigid orthodox insurgents. But now it seems they were never vanished completely.
