Iran: Mahmoud Ahmedinejad is summoned by the parliament

The Iranian parliament has summoned the president of the country, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, saying that he has been involved in the mismanagement of the country’s affairs, especially the current economic woes. The list of accusations against the President of the Islamic Republic is long. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, this is the first incident of its kind in the history of the Islamic theocratic state. This comes after a petition filed by the parliamentary committee and the ongoing power struggle in the country ahead of the parliamentary elections that is scheduled to take place in March.
The parliament deputy speaker, Mohammad Raza Bahnoar, said on Tuesday that the Iranian lawmakers have been pressing for the President to answer their questions on the economy of the country. The charges also include the intentional bypassing of a special budget which was meant for the public transportation and the Tehran subway.
The president will also be questioned by the lawmakers on the issues related to the decisions made regarding the domestic and foreign policy. Ahmedinejad will be sent the summons this week. After one month, it is obligatory for the President to appear before the parliament. At a time when Iran is facing a stand off with Israel and other western nations over its suspected nuclear program, it now seems that it has been gripped by an internal crisis, too. The ordinary Iranian citizens have been concerned regarding the economic downturn of the country as the strict western sanctions have now hit the country’s economy hard.
