On 28th July 2010 at 6:14 p.m. local time, a military cargo plane crashed at the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. The military plane was on a training mission when it went down in a wooded area located at the east end of its runway.

The incident occured when the pilot made an attempt to turn the plane towards runway 5.

Rumors are that four crew members were aboard at the time of the crash; however their condition has not been disclosed. It is reported by people who witnessed the crash, that a gray smoky cloud went up almost 750 feet. Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins said that it was a local training task but unfortunately it looks as if no one will survive.

The number of casualties has not been revealed. Alaska Gov. Seal Parnell has expressed his condolences concerning the crash and loss of life; he also showed compassion for the crews’ families.

“Alaskans are very connected to the military, and our thoughts and prayers are with Alaska’s Air Force family,” Parnell said.

Air force officers are carrying out an investigation. This plane incident is the third aircraft accident in Anchorage this year. In June one child was killed and four other were seriously burned after a plane left the city’s small airport and crashed.
