Worst Floods in the Pakistan since 1929 Says UN

Jul 31st, 2010

Reported by: Soha crwenewswire Mideast correspondent.

The worst floods in the region since 1929 according to UN have so far claimed the lives of al most 800 people in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa of Pakistan. Unconfirmed sources say that approximately 104 people are missing. Due to the disastrous non-stop monsoon rains the province has been cut-off from all the other parts of the country.

It is feared that the number of casualties may increase as many people are still under the debris of the buildings and houses. In addition, thousands of people have been stranded as the three day continuous rain has washed away many houses.

Pakistan Army continued its relief and rescue operation in the flood-hit areas and so far 14,250 people have been evacuated from the affected areas. Navy teams are also taking part in the rescue operation as boats have been sent to the flooded areas to escort people.

Considering the seriousness of situation the government of Pakistan has sought the help of the United Nations and international community for humanitarian assistance and rescue and relief activities in the affected areas of the country.

The meteorological department has forecasted that another monsoon weather system is developing over India, which is likely to move towards Pakistan and cause more rains in Sindh and Punjab province from 2nd August.
