Karzai`s Peace Council unacceptable to US
Reported by: Soha CRWE Newswire Middle East Correspondent
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has established a peace council with the main aim of holding peace talks with the Taliban, ex-insurgents, and warlords.
But the peace council has already become controversial; because of the past of some of the members. The formation of the council was decided in the peace Jirga in June at Kabul.
One of the members of the council include the former President of Afghanistan and the warlord Burhanuddin Rabbani and other warlords like Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayaf and Haji Muhammad Muhaqqiq. These warlords were an important part of the resistance in the country during the rule of the Taliban from 1996 to 2000.
These three commanders also helped USA to topple the government of the Taliban.
It is also being said that the peace council will include the former Prime Minister and the leader of Hizb-i-Islami Gulbuddin Hikmatyar. It is noteworthy that Hizb-i-Islami is currently involved in attacks against the NATO forces in Afghanistan and it has also joined the alliance of the Taliban in this regard. USA considers it as a terrorist group as well and even conducts drone attacks inside Pakistan to target the members of this group.
Karzai has once again asked the Taliban to stop the resistance and join the peace process. He asked them to stop blowing up schools, and killing the people for others.
It is very well-known that when Karzai uses the term ‘others’ he is indirectly referring to Pakistan which he has done on many occasions. On others he was blunt enough to directly mention Pakistan.
It is noteworthy that USA has objected on the inclusion of the Taliban and the insurgents in the council. But so far Karzai has rebuffed the criticism.
Analysts believe that Karzai fears that after the evacuation of the allied forces from Afghanistan in 2011 his government may come under intense pressure, which mostly relies on the western support for its survival.
So this time again it seems that Karzai is more interested in strengthening and securing his hold on power rather than being concerned for the country.
