Opposition Parties Accuse Ruling Party of Fraud in Presidential Elections in Haiti
Reported by: Emon CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent.
In the Republic of Haiti, 12 out of 18 candidates for president have demanded a break held in the country’s presidential elections, accusing the authorities of fraud and deceit.
One of the opposition candidates, Mirlande Manigat, said that ballot boxes were stuffed with ballots before the election. Another presidential contender accused the current leader of Haiti, Rene Preval, of trying to steel the election and prefer a candidate from the ruling party Jude Celestin. And Sam R. Preval has no right to participate in elections, as he served as president for two terms.
Thousands of people protested and marched in the capital of Haiti, Port au Prince, demanding that polls be scrapped. Many Haitians also complain that they could not take part in elections because their names were not on voter lists.
Haiti still can not recover from the devastating earthquake that occurred in January and a recent outbreak of cholera that killed many living.
