Rio de Janeiro Police Seize Forty Tons of Marijuana

On Monday, November 29, Brazilian police seized 40 tons of marijuana during a special operation against drug traffickers in the Grota favela District Alemao, located in the north of Rio de Janeiro.
The military police alone apprehended 20 tons of marijuana and the remaining 20 tons of marijuana were seized by the other security forces that participated in the crackdown.
According to local police, the marijuana was packed and ready for sale, media were shown several residences, where huge quantities of marijuana, ready packaged for distribution, were stacked in rooms and dumped by drug cartel fleeing security forces. Also, local media reported the seizure during the operation in the Grota 440 Pound of cocaine, and reports of mass arrests were reported.
The purpose of the operations of power put the defeat of organized crime in the city in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup 2014 finals which will takes the famous stadium “Maracana” and the 2016 Olympics Games. According to police officials, Brazilian favela’s population is estimated at 2 million people, so some 2,600 police and soldiers backed up by heavy equipments including helicopters, tanks and armored personnel carriers were present at the crackdown.
