Owing to a recent research carried out by the charity Sense About Science, the researchers have lashed out at the celebrities for encouraging pricey potions and promoting marketing myths and promoting pseudo scientific nonsense over the years.

One of the most popular stunts of the celebrities is the Master Cleanse detox diet, supported by super model, Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, and her actor husband, Ashton Kutcher. The detox diet comprises maple syrup, lemon and pepper for two consecutive weeks without consuming anything else.

Miss Campbell was on the  Oprah Winfrey Show and said that using a detox diet, once can clean up his/her body, once in a while. Dietician Anna Raymond replied to her comment by saying that having such a diet is not cleansing the body but starving it, which will produce potentially harmful chemical substances, ketones, in the body.

English pop singer, Sarah Harding, said in an interview with Now magazine that she eats charcoal to absorb all the bad and damaging stuff of the body. She added that although it does not taste good but its advantage outweighs its bad taste. Chemist Dr John Elmsley said that charcoal could only help with bad wind and has nothing to do with absorbing damaging material from the body. He added that human body is equipped with expert system of removing all the damaging materials of the daily consumption on its own and does not need the help of charcoal to do it.

Another popular celebrity stunt is use of Power Balance, a silicone bracelet embedded with hologram to improve, energy, strength and flexibility. Celebrities supporting this bracelet are David Beckham, Robert De Niro and Kate Middleton.

Assistant director of Sense About Science, Lindsay Hogg, said that when celebrities say anything about medicine, health and science, it is readily picked up and appears on every related Google search for months and if it is wrong, doctors and scientists have to deal with the after effects of those comments. She added that celebrities are public figures and people look up to them, therefore, they should be extra cautious before making any absurd claim and spreading it like a jungle fire.
