Cell Phones Proves to be Life Saving Tool in Africa
Via free text reminders from clinics and a network of calling system in which doctors call each other are helping Africa. They are so much beneficial that the text message appears with life-saving discretion.
The free texts from largest HIV treatment site of South Africa are part of a push in Africa in order to boost health by focusing the continent’s 624 million mobile phone subscribers.
Patients check their cell phones all the time. Nearly 10,000 people have chosen for the txtAlert reminders, which have proven a great success. Percentage of missed appointments at the centers has fallen down if we compare with mid 2007.
Unfortunately Africa is poor in landlines and hospital beds but they are rich in cell phone, that’s why mobile health (mHealth) offers different opportunities to providing care at a low cost, according to experts.
In West Africa, about 2,200 doctors from Ghana and all of Liberia’s 143 doctors have signed on to an anti-poverty group Africa Aid’s MDNet network, that allows them to call or text other physicians for free. In Ghana, a national directory is helpful for them to find the number to call.
