A Smoke free Turkey
According to a research 10,000 cigarettes are being produced worldwide every single second. According to another research cigarette companies add more than a thousand chemicals in cigarettes so that the consumers may not “ever” quit smoking. The main components being Tar (black sticky material used in road making), nicotine (present in tea and coke, make the human mind fresh) and caffeine (make the human mind hyper active, and dulls pain).
Cancer, respiratory diseases and heart attack (coronary diseases) have been related directly to smoking. The problem was not only for active smokers but also for passive smokers. Especially it was dangerous for children and pregnant women.
Due to its various harmful effects Turkey banned smoking at public places on 20th July 2009.
Can the effects be imagined of this? Yes in the biggest city of turkey i.e. Istanbul alone, a drop of 20% in patients which were being admitted to hospitals for smoking related illness like ulcers, black gums and teeth, heart attacks, problem in respiration and another twenty different types of cancers including mouth cancer, throat cancer, gum cancer etc.
Moreover the heart attack and heart failure rate also fell dramatically.
Turkey took a simple step no one will be smoking at bars, clubs, discos, casinos and any public places. Anyone caught doing so will be fined $45.
Amazingly the medical cost saved equaled $1.9 million. Hope that like Turkey other countries will take this step also.
