Tom Martinez, the longtime personal coach to quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots, has died at age 67.
His wife, Olivia, said to the San Mateo Daily Journal that he died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while receiving kidney dialysis treatment. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that he died in Redwood City.
Tom Martinez worked with Tom Brady when he was a teenager growing up in San Mateo, where Martinez was a coach at College of San Mateo. Their friendship continued during Brady's NFL career.

The survivor of a deadly avalanche in Washington recalled the horror of being tossed in roiling snow as if she was trapped inside a washing machine. "We didn't really hear anything at first, then my partner started screaming at me, 'Elyse, avalanche!' It just happened so quickly," professional skier Elyse Saugstad told CBS News.
"My first thought was that it isn't that big. Within a second it immediately became much, much more. It feels like you're inside of a washing machine, and being tossed around and turned, and it's all white and you don't know which way is up and which is down." Linsanity just got a little bit crazier. Super star Jeremy Lin helped the Knicks bounce out last year's NBA champs in a face-off yesterday 104-97, ending the Dallas Mavericks' six-game winning streak. The point guard only made 28 points and a new career-high 14 assists, notes the AP.

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, whose single in the 1986 World Series for the New York Mets, touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, has died today. He was 57. Last May, Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, was an 11-time All-Star and a Gold Glove winner three times.
Nicknamed "Kid," Carter played almost two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco, and then the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the one of the first players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with an Expos cap on his plaque.

A former University of Virginia lacrosse player who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend lied about visiting friends hours before her battered body was found and that he had a "blank stare" on his face, a former teammate testified Wednesday as the prosecution rested its case and the defense began.
Ken Clausen and other lacrosse teammates of George Huguely testified at his first-degree murder trial in the May 3, 2010, slaying of Yeardley Love. Friends have testified that the woman's lacrosse player had a jealously fueled, on-and-off again relationship with Huguely, who is 24.

Even after his amazing week last week, this one took Linsanity to a whole new level. On Tuesday against Toronto, it was Lin for the win even with bloody elbows!

Freddie Solomon, the former wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins and 49ers who became known as "Fabulous Freddie" and committed himself to community service for decades, died on Monday. He was 59.
The 49ers announced the passing of Solomon, who had battled cancer over the past year and lived in Florida. He played on the first of the 49er's four Super Bowl championship teams in the 1980s during an 11-year NFL career.
"The 49ers have lost a member of our family today. We will miss you, Freddie Solomon," the 49ers CEO Jed York posted on his Twitter account.

He knew that his game was getting close, and he broke through with a lot of flair Sunday in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
That "he" turned out to be Phil Mickelson, not Tiger Woods.

Mickelson went from a deficit of six-shots to a two-shot lead in just six holes, and closed with an 8-under 64 for a two-shot victory over Charlie Wi and gave Tiger a Sunday thrashing not many saw coming.
Mickelson and Woods were playing in the second-to-last group, and Mickelson beat him by 11 shots. He won for his fourth time at Pebble Beach, and has became only the ninth player in PGA Tour history with 40 wins.
