At least 49 people were killed with over 600 people injured Wednesday when a train plowed into a platform at a Buenos Aires station, state media said.
The number of casualties could increase, according to emergency services director Alberto Crescenti .
Shaken passengers told reporters the crash sounded like a bomb blast.
Authorities believe there were problems with the train's brakes, Transportation Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi said.
The packed train was traveling at 16 mph when it crashed,.

On Tuesday, more than 2,000 angry Afghans protested outside an American air base after they learned that copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, were burned in a pile of garbage at a sprawling U.S. military base north of Kabul.
The demonstrators shouted, "Die, die, foreigners!", some fired rifles into the air, while threw rocks at the gate of the base.
Remnants of various tires which were set on fire at an entrance gate to the sprawling U.S. base, and as many as several hundred protesters were continuing chanting at another gate, but appeared to be dispersing.

Familiar with the terrain and well-equipped, approximately twelve expert skiers were making their way through a foot-and-a half of fresh snow when an avalanche struck them in an out-of-bounds area near a popular Washington ski resort.
Three men lost their lives Sunday when they were swept about a quarter-mile down a canyon, and a 4th skier was caught up in the slide was saved by a safety device, authorities stated. The large group had separated into 3 smaller groups before the avalanche, but all the backcountry skiers were buried to some extent. The Maryland House passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage on Friday, delivering a major victory to Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, who had proposed it. Yet its implementation remained uncertain as its opponents promised to take it to voters in November.
The bill, known as the Civil Marriage Protection Act, inched by in a 72-to-67 vote, drawing loud applause from proponents in the House. A similar bill which failed in the chamber last year.

The Japanese authorities arrested seven in the accounting scandal at Olympus, including the camera maker’s former chairman and executive vice president on Thursday as part of investigations into a decade-long cover-up that has prompted concern over what critics say is lax corporate governance at Japanese companies.
Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, a former president and chairman of Olympus was arrested in Tokyo along with two other former executives on suspicion of having falsified financial statements. Two former investment bankers suspected of assisting to set up the cover-up, and two of their associates, were also arrested.

Weeks ahead of college students heading out for Spring Break, the U.S. State Department is sending out warnings about the potential danger of traveling to Mexico.
The agency is encouraging Americans to stay away from all or parts of about half of the states in Mexico, which has seen a dramatic growth in drug-related violence.
It is advising caution for traveling in 3 other border states and many areas of central and western Mexico where drug cartels have been at war.

Lottery officials revealed that someone who played the Powerball in Rhode Island is the winner of the $336.4 million jackpot.
The new multimillionaire has not claimed the lottery has not revealed where the winning ticket was sold. The player had to match all of Saturday's 5 numbers, 1-10-37-52-57, and Powerball number 11, to win.
Because of increasing sales, the jackpot almost doubled from $173.5 million on Feb. 1.

President Obama will announce a plan that attempts to accommodate religious employers opposed to a rule that would require them to provide access to birth control for women free of charge.
The administration announced last month that religious-affiliated employers had to cover birth control as preventive care for women. Churches and houses of worship were exempt, but all other affiliated organizations were ordered to comply by August 2013.

A Syrian opposition group gave a report of as many as 126 deaths at the hands of government forces Thursday as President Bashar al-Assad increased his brutal assault against an opposition that desires to end to his regime.
