Weyerhaeuser Reports First Quarter Results

FEDERAL WAY, Wash.--(CRWENewswire April 29, 2011)-- Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) today reported net earnings of $99 million for the first quarter, or 18 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $1.6 billion. This compares with a net loss of $20 million on net sales of $1.4 billion for the same period last year. Earnings for the first quarter of 2011 include an after-tax gain of $96 million on the previously announced sale of 82,000 acres of non-strategic timberlands in southwest Washington. According to diplomats UN inspectors may say in an upcoming report that a Syrian Desert site bombed to rubble in 2007 was probably a covert nuclear reactor, opening the way for the UN Security Council to take up the case. The Vienna-based diplomats said that there are indications nuclear activity may have taken place at the Dair Alzour site, but the next reports could use more pointed wording. The IAEA has declined to comment bout the report, which will be presented to its 35-nation governing board in June. An Austrian diplomat overseeing Bosnia, Valentin Inzko, said the EU must view the nation as a test for its new diplomatic corps set up last year to raise the EU’s global profile. US says India has Crucial Role to Play in Afghanistan

The US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan says that India has to play an important role in supporting the Afghan people, as US expedites its diplomatic efforts to end the Afghan crisis. Mr. Marc Grossman, who made this statement on Friday in New Delhi, is currently visiting India, Pakistan and Afghanistan to encourage greater reconciliation in the region before June when President Barack Obama is expected to start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. Mr. Grossman will also be visiting Saudi Arabia, which is helping the Afghan government in reaching out to the Taliban insurgents for ending violence in the war-torn country.
