On Monday the opposition Syrian National Council issued a warning saying that in a town near Damascus a massacre was likely as thousands of young men have been detained by the Syrian security forces. In a statement which was received in Nicosia, the opposition expressed its reservations that there was the chance of a massacre as the Syrian forces have gathered hundreds of young men in a public square in Rankus, located some 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Damascus, the Syrian capital. The economy of Spain shrank in the last quarter of 2011, pushing the euro-zone states toward its second recession since 2009 and undermining Spanish government efforts to narrow the budget deficit.
The latest official figure shows that the economy of Spain shrank by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 from the previous three months, while it rose 0.3 percent from a year earlier.
The National Institute of Statistics of Spain confirmed that there had been zero growth in the third quarter.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie shot off a scathing retort Monday to critics who are comparing him to segregationists of the Deep South, calling one opponent a "numbnuts" for distorting Christie's statement making a comparison on the opportunity of a vote on same-sex marriage to the civil rights era.
As the General Assembly's Democratic majority is pushing legislation for a same-sex marriage bill, Christie has made a vow to veto, he argued he would rather put the question to voters in November. After Monday's public announcement that host Steve Jones will not be returning to Simon Cowell's baby come reports that judge Nicole Scherzinger, and even more amazing, Cowell's longtime sparring partner, Paula Abdul, won't be returning either.
Aside from the show's untouchable producer and star Cowell, that leaves only judge L.A. Reid.

A suburban Richmond man dealing with a custody battle with his estranged wife used flexible tubing to channel the exhaust from a van into a bedroom from the air duct, where he cut his neck and those of his twin three-year-old daughters, authorities stated Monday.
Hanover County deputies got a call just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday from the girls' mother, Kristina Hooper. When they showed up at the scene, she was sobbing on her knees at the end of the gravel driveway, court records said.
She told deputies, according to a search warrant affidavit returned Monday that her babies were dead, they were in the house.

Assisted by improving margins and rising international sales, toy company Mattel (MAT: 31.08, +1.55, +5.25%) posted a stronger-than-expected 14% leap in fourth-quarter profits on Tuesday.
The earnings beat, added to a 35% hike in its dividend payout, sent shares of El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel leaping 5% to a 52-week high.
The creator of Barbie and Hot Wheels stated that it earned $370.6 million, or $1.07 a share, compared with a profit of $325.2 million, or 89 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts had predicted a profit of $1.01 a share.
