Active Over the Summer

It’s no secret that out waist lines are getting larger as television watching and internet browsing has made us more sedentary than ever before. When you add to the equation high calorie foods that are more easily accessible down in past years, it is a recipe for disaster.

The summer is usually a time for relaxation for young people. However, there is significant danger of gaining weight as we lose the structure of the school year and high school sports come to an end.

Here are some ideas for staying fit and active over the summer:

Idea number one: swimming. The heat of the summer often makes us look for ways to cool off. What better way to cool off than developing a swim exercise routine.

If you don’t have a pool, look for a local YMCA or community pool for low impact exercise. Low impact exercise like swimming has been correlated with lower mortality rates and improved heart rate. It’s often an exercise that everyone loves from young to old. Consider joining swim lessons, or look for an organized swim sport team like water polo. What better way to stay fit and cool off over the summer then swimming!

Idea number two: capture your scenery with photography. With most people today, you probably already own a digital camera as part of your phone. You can go bird-watching or identify different species of plants or animals in your area.

For an added level of fun, make a bingo card for each member of your family. Each space can represent a different bird or plant species. Have a contest to see which family member can complete their bingo card first, marking off different finds you photograph.

Idea number three: go hiking. Using the internet, identify local hikes in your area. Rank them from easiest to most difficult and try to raise your level of ability throughout the summer. Cap it off with the longest hike in your area.

You can also use a pedometer to track your step count. Try going for a longer hike each day. You can set a total step count to obtain by the end of the summer, or a “longest hike” step count.

Idea number four: get rolling. Look for biking trails in your area or easy rides where there is a sidewalk or bike path. Consider taking up roller blading, roller skating, or skateboarding.

It’s easy to get back in the routine of riding a bike. Like they say, once you learn how to ride a bike you never forget.

Idea number five: take up spring cleaning. Use the summer time to get your house organized. If your garage is like mine, it is probably cluttered with boxes full of holiday decorations and old paint cans.

Choose one area of your house per week and get it cleaned and reorganized. Now might also be the perfect time to get those household repairs done or to have a garage sale to downsize a bit.

Idea number six: take up running. Have you ever dreamed of accomplishing a marathon or even just a 5K? The summer is the perfect time to work on these goals. Start small and add walking to your daily routine.

It is easier to stick with a commitment if your entire family participates. Set a goal for the end of summer such as competing in a 5K race. Determine the farthest you can run now and slowly add steps until you reach the 5K mark. Working for a goal is a great way to stay motivated and to stay in shape.
